his eyes are colorless Apr 23, 2018

dark like silence
a smile that mutes the world

i knew a boy when i was a child
my best friend, quiet
but brown eyes always thinking

transparent fingers carrying his heart
nails at his teeth
serious but always ready to dance

honest and beautiful and small

so many weekends
together on little adventures
but we were not on quite the same page

his face the moment he realized, branded in my memory,
the summer wings had melted;
a long quiet autumn

he was gone around a corner
but i still feel him waiting against the wall
my ears burning after all these years

like the time we fell asleep on the couch
and you took a picture of
neither of us sleeping

now we spend the rest of our lives
same-poled magnets searching
for something that feels
like that touch of the sun

dark like a muted world
a smile in silence

his eyes are colorless
